Don't worry if you talk to your dog, you're not barking madby Issac Davison/ Cartoon by Peter Bromhead
Don't worry, at least half of animal owners spill their problems to their
pets, according to a new study. And it gets worse - a third of women say their dog is a better listener than
their partner, while 15 per cent of men reckon their dog shows them more
affection than their loved ones. Pet-care company Purina, which commissioned the research, said New Zealanders
were increasingly humanising their pets and treating them as members of the
family. Pet-care expert Shivaun Statham said that people were "definitely tending
towards treating their pets less like animals and more like children". |

Evacuation of pets a priority after Katrinaby Mary Foster
Sandra Henry and her dog Tasha, who were reunited two years after Hurricane
Katrina, hang out on the front porch of their home where the spray-painted words
"Dog Found" can still be seen, in New Orleans, Monday, Aug. 23, 2010. NEW ORLEANS — The moment cut sharply through the chaos, suffering and fear of
Hurricane Katrina — a small boy sobbed hysterically as he was separated from his
dog Snowball while departing the wretched Louisiana Superdome. Snowball was one of thousands of pets split up from their owners after the
storm struck Aug. 29, 2005, and the story triggered an outpouring of help to
save stranded animals and reunite them with their families.

Dogs and other pets welcome at Florida dorm By Luis Zaragoza
The Orlando Sentinel
Jasmine Parham's new college roommate is a dear friend from back home. The roomie responds to "Leo" and never goes to class, but can perform some
neat tricks. Leonora, a frisky border collie, and her owner, Parham, are among the first
residents of the first pet-friendly dorm at Stetson University in DeLand,
Fla. About 20 students and their pets — dogs, cats and a few caged gerbils and
rats — are taking up residence at Nemec Hall, an established dorm, as the fall
semester begins this week.

We are very sad to say Ulina our July/August cover dog Past away on 8/17This is a quote from her Parents Michelle and Vick of Orlando: We lost Ulina our precious family member. She was a blessing to me & our family. Ulina was not just a pet, she helped me through some very difficult times and I will never forget her. Her sprit will always remain close to my heart. She was such a smart, funny & loving dog, there was never a dull moment with her. From day we picked her up I knew there would be a bond between her & I. She protected & loved us! Nothing will replace her but I thank god that we were blessed with her beautiful puppies... they are so much like her and I promised her I would take care of them. May you rest in peace my precious girl...

Hot dogs need special care to beat summer heatby Gail Krueger
The term "dog days" refers to the hot, sultry days of July and August. The
ancient Greeks and Roman used the term to denote the period of time when Sirius,
the Dog Star (Canicula, in Latin) rules the night sky. The ancients sacrificed a brown dog at the beginning of the dog days to
appease the rage of Sirius, believing that the star was the cause of the
weather. During this time, "the seas boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad,
and all
creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and
phrensies," according to Brady's Clavis Calendarium, published in 1813.
