The term "dog days" refers to the hot, sultry days of July and August. The
ancient Greeks and Roman used the term to denote the period of time when Sirius,
the Dog Star (Canicula, in Latin) rules the night sky. The ancients sacrificed a brown dog at the beginning of the dog days to
appease the rage of Sirius, believing that the star was the cause of the
weather. During this time, "the seas boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad,
and all
creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and
phrensies," according to Brady's Clavis Calendarium, published in 1813.
The Food and Drug Administration
announced the expansion of a recent pet-food recallyesterday.
Feline’s
Pride issued a voluntary recall of a batch of Feline’s Pride Raw Food July
1. That recall affected only 2.5-pound bags of Natural Chicken Formula produced
on 6/10/10. Now the company expanded the voluntary recall to include the same type of
food produced on 6/21/10, because it also may be contaminated with
salmonella. The FDA warns again that people handling raw pet food can become infected
with salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after
having contact with the raw pet food or any surfaces exposed to the product.
Tick diseases on the rise
Steve Dale | Tribune Media Services
There's an infestation of ticks! Next thing we know, there will be panic in
the streets! "I'm not sure that response is necessary, but by using appropriate products
recommended by a veterinarian, we can protect our pets," says Dr. Michael Paul,
executive director of the Companion Animal Parasite Council.
If ticks were counted in the U.S. Census, it would show there are 10 to 20
times more of them today than a decade ago. "The problem reaches beyond the tick
gross-out factor," adds Paul. "Ticks carry diseases. Often a cocktail of
diseases can be delivered by one tick. The result has been more sick pets."
A sugar substitute found in a variety of sugar-free and dietetic cookies, mints
and chewing gum is proving highly toxic, even fatal, to snack-snatching dogs. Xylitol, popular in Europe for decades but a relative newcomer to the U.S.
alternative-sweeteners market, can be "very, very serious" to dogs when
ingested, says Dana Farbman, spokeswoman for the Animal Poison Control Center of
the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Adventures of Ernie " 2 Legged Version "
by Julie Casey
We had been looking for a few months; looking for just the
right dog to add to our family. We spent Saturdays visiting the various Central
Florida shelters and although each one of us fell in love with several
four-legged friends, we never found the one that all four of us could agree on.
Until one day we found this cute little guy online. A picture of him was posted
on the website for Heidi's Legacy dog Rescue. But we also found him on a
website for the Douglasville Animal Shelter. Could it really be the same dog?
In two different states? It didn’t make much sense.
Premium Pet Food - Not as Expensive as You may Think
Have you ever wondered just what does go into the food you feed you pet? If you feed your pet a nationally advertised brand you may be in for quite a shock. With a little research, you will find that most of the ingredients found in the national brands shouldn't be fed to any living creature, let alone your beloved pet. Many of the premium foods that our advertisers carry are free of the fillers and potentially harmful ingredients that are found in the nationally advertised brands.
